THE BOOK OF PSALMS
PSALMS OF DAVID
A PSALM OF DAVID
A PSALM OF DAVID STUDY ON
A PSALM OF DAVID QUOTES WITH
A PSALM OF DAVID MESSAGE
Welcome back to
Daily Bread and our continuing study of the Old Testament. This study of the
Book of Psalms will be an independent study with this one page as an
introduction and background of the book. It is best that you actually read
these Psalms yourself as they are so very inspirational.
We’ll start off
with a Daily Bread Stick. What is a Psalm, anyway? A Psalm is a sacred song
or poem used in the praising of God. In Greek, the word Psalms means playing
of a harp. King David, who wrote these Psalms, played the stringed
instrument since he was a young boy. He would sing psalms to God while he
was in the fields tending sheep.
King David was called
the apple of God’s eye by GOD Himself. Perhaps one of the reasons was the
touching Psalms that he wrote and played for God. Many of the Christian
musicians of the day have picked up on this TRUTH and have written some
awesome songs honoring and praising God. Here is some free C-O-O-L
Christian Music
that you can listen to as to FEEL what I mean. Perhaps you can create some
music for the Lord too. Or maybe start keeping a journal of thoughts
that you want to share with God as to show your love for Him.
While some Psalms
are dedicated solely to the glory of God as almost all include a note of
praise, the collection of Psalms range in subject from fear to
Faith, grief to Grace, judgment to joy, prophecy to peace, and war to
wisdom. You may also notice that in many Psalms, the very first idea is
immediately repeated in different words.
The Psalms of
David are kind of like his journal to God, expressing his praises,
questions, weaknesses, gratitude, and everyday life experiences. If you read
about David’s life, starting at
1 Samuel,
Chapter 16 through the end of 2 Samuel, you’ll find that he wrote many
of his Psalms while he was king, and in request of the Lord’s guidance and
protection. David was also a Prophet of God and some of His Psalms were
prophecies that he was sharing.
A
PSALM OF DAVID LESSON WITH A PSALM OF DAVID EXPLANATION AND
A PSALM OF DAVID SUMMARY
I will now give ya
a sneak preview into but one of these awesome Psalms of David ... David's
prophecy of Jesus on the Cross.
Psalm 22:16-18
While Jesus was on the Cross, He said "My God, My God, why hast thou
forsaken me" ... There have been many assumptions as to why Jesus spoke
these words but there is only one TRUTH. Let us seek the TRUTH in scripture together, as to avoid deception
and to be set FREE from any doubts. The EXACT words that Jesus spoke on
the Cross, were spoken before by the prophet David, in the
Psalm 22:1
... So Jesus was simply quoting Scripture.
When Jesus echoed these
words, Jesus was directing the people to this particular scripture to
reveal to them an awesome TRUTH. In the same
Psalm 22
but in verses
16-18 is the prophecy that Jesus was directing them to. It reveals in
verse 16, that David prophesied that "the assembly of the wicked have
enclosed
ME;
they pierced
MY
hands and
MY
feet" (In other words, the prophecy was saying that this person would be
surrounded by wicked people and they would crucify Him) In verse 17 it says
that "I
may tell all of
MY
bones: they look and stare upon
ME.
(Meaning this person would not have any bones broken and the people would
look UPON Him) In verse 18, it says "They part
MY
garments among them, and cast lots upon
MY
vesture" (This means they will divide the clothing of this person and gamble
for His clothes) Now, we know from Scripture these things never happened to
David. Sooooooooo he speaking of another. If so, why was he saying ME, MY and I?
Well, as we all KNOW ...
Jesus is the one that these things actually happened to and it was happening at
the time that Jesus spoke the Words ... "My God, My God, why hast thou
forsaken me." Sooooooo, what Jesus was saying upon the Cross when He
said these words was ... It is
ME
talking through David in
Psalm 22. Sooooo cool huh?
Now stay with me on this as you are
about to get a lil insight into Prophecy ... Prophecy is a lil strange.
Prophecy is GOD speaking THROUGH man. In
Zechariah 12:10 it says "They shall
look upon
ME
whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for
HIM.
Now did ya catch the person change from ME to HIM? As the writer of prophecy
... IT is, of course, the prophet speaking or writing, but it is also
just as Jesus said ... It is
ME
talking. Jesus is the WORD of God (John 1:1 and
1:14). It was JESUS that spoke these Words through all of the prophets.
As He indicated in
Isaiah 52:6 ... "Therefore MY people shall know MY
name: therefore they shall know in that day that I Am He that doth
speak: behold it is I" ...
A PSALM OF DAVID INFORMATION WITH A PSALM OF DAVID MEANING
AND A PSALM OF DAVID DISCUSSION
Again, in
Isaiah 48:16 He makes it sooooo
clear. "Come ye near unto ME hear this; "I" have not spoken in secret from
the beginning; from the time that it was there am "I" ... and now the LORD
and His Spirit hath sent ME" ... Awesome huh? NOT only does Jesus reveal the
TRUTH of the TRINITY by saying The Lord and His Spirit sent ME but shares
with us that He has been from the beginning, just as the Apostle John
revealed and that it is HE that speaks to us in the Word of God (The Bible)
as HE is the WORD of God. In all prophecy, including what Jesus said on the
Cross, dying for the sins of those looking upon Him and our sins today.
Jesus was saying what He has from the beginning to those that could
understand ... IT IS ME !!! Absolutely awesome huh?
Since there are
150 Psalms in the Bible, you can read a Psalm or two each day, and in
no time, you’ll have read 'em all and I suggest ya read em often as to know
some of them by heart. You’ll also start relating them to your own life, and
when different trials arise, you’ll find it comforting to read the Psalms of
David and know that even God’s anointed (Chosen) went through trying times,
and they’ll teach you a new way of prayer as well.
Some Psalms are in
story form and some go back as far as Creation. You may recognize that
you’ve sung many verses from Psalms in hymns and even contemporary Christian
music throughout the years and never knew they were from Psalms.
When you read
them, I encourage you to acquire a fondness for the 16th century
language used in the translation of the Bible from Hebrew to English. It has
an eloquence that can’t be matched, if you’ll open your heart to it.
I hope you enjoy
the Book of Psalms and add it to your daily sacrifice (offering of your
self) to God, maybe perhaps even writing some of your own psalms to the
Father. I bet He’d cherish each and every word.
Our next study is
the Book of Proverbs so don’t miss it, next, right here at your Daily Bread.
